SPAY AND NEUTER
SPAY AND NEUTER …. BE A
RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER
Day after day shelters
see people bringing in a carrier or a box carrying yet another
unwanted litter of puppies. There are so many unwanted dogs -- and
yes, even unwanted Goldens! Please join our fight against pet
overpopulation by having your pets spayed and neutered. 15 dogs
and 45 cats are born for every person …. way too many for any one
person to care for. Where do these dogs and cats end up when there
are no homes for them? In the shelter, in rescue organizations,
and many roam the streets … never to find a loving forever home. The
euthanasia rate is staggering in shelters, not because animals are not
adoptable but because there are not enough people to open their
homes to care for them.
Spaying a female or
neutering a male is another way to make sure our pets lead long
and healthy lives. Some health benefits are associated with these
procedures.
Spaying (surgical
removal of ovaries and uterus) before the first season
drastically reduces the chances of breast or uterine cancer.
If the dog is spayed as an older dog, the chances of breast or
uterine cancer are measurably reduced. Castration (neutering--surgical removal of the testicles) virtually
eliminates the chance of testicular cancer.
There are other
advantages as well.
Advantages of
spaying:
*No messy heats.
*No “suitors” waiting
in your yard.
*Decreased incidences
of pyometra (serious and often fatal infection of the uterus).
Advantages of
neutering:
*Lessens male
aggressive and territorial behaviors but does not affect the
personality.
*Prevents the need to
roam in search of a female.
*Decreased incidences
of urogenital diseases.
